Packard Bell Bakelite Tabletop Radio (1947)

I picked up this cute Packard Bell Bakelite radio off of E-bay for the princely sum of $17. I had thought it might actually be plaskon, but when it arrived, it was obviously bakelite. Well, that's ok, I still like it. I like the deco look, with the louvers and especially the handle (have I ever mentioned how much I like radios with handles?)

This one is a hummer, so I'll have to pull the chassis and replace the electrolytics for sure. The chassis appears to be extremely clean and dust free, so perhaps this one was taken care of a little better. The case has a few minor paint chips, not enough to really warrant repainting. There is a slight tear in the cardboard which makes up the dial face. This was not apparent when I bid on it, and it was not mentioned. This is one of the problems with ebay - you never know what you're going to get. I think it can be patched up, but we'll have to see. The dial has California and west coast stations marked on it, indicating that this radio was initially sold out west.
