Airline Bakelite Tabletop

This Airline radio dates to around 1940. I saw in an antique mall in Plainfield, IN. I was initially attracted to its deco styling, but I wasn't so attracted to the price. The tag also said "works", but I could not get the on/off/volume control to work. After waiting a few months, the radio finally dropped enough in price for me to grab it.

The on/off/volume control just needed a bit of lubrication to work fine. Once I powered the radio on, it was obvious that it would need new filter capacitors. I went ahead and replaced all the paper filter capacitors in the radio. Once that was taken care of, the radio sounded much better.

One important thing to remember when working with old radios is to never make anything worse than it was to begin with. On this particular radio, the dial cord was a bit off, and in the course of trying to get it right, it broke in half and fell off. Of course, I hadn't bothered to draw a sketch of what it looked like ahead of time! This required me having to disassemble to dial face area of the radio, and restring the dial cord. Since I didn't have the stringing diagram, it took me about 2 hours to get it right. A powerful lesson for next time.

The case has a couple of paint chips, but overall it is not in bad condition. It could be a candidate for repainting, but for now it's just fine.

I don't have the model number for this radio. If anyone knows it, please e-mail me!
