I found this great Admiral radio on e-Bay for $15. I really like these
hard plastic radios of the 1950's and early 1960's, and this one is a
classic. These are so hard to find in decent condition, usually the cases are scratched
and chipped. This one is in pretty good shape.
This particular model is the 5-tube "Ashley" from 1961. This radio also
came in harvest yellow and shell pink.
When it arrived, the radio did not work. The cord was in very bad shape and needed
to be replaced before I could test the radio. I replaced the cord, and went
ahead and replaced the electrolytics as well. Once that was done, the radio
powered on and worked fine!
The case was pretty grungy and needed a good cleaning. I washed it with
soapy warm water (with the chassis removed, of course) and then cleaned it
with paint thinner to remove a sticky area. I then polished it numerous
times with Novus polish to remove small scratches and bring out a great
shine. The case looks great.
